The Next Generation of Disney Stars (CONT.)

February 7, 2010

Beginning under the stewardship of Rich Ross, who has since moved from the channel to head the company’s feature film division, Disney began an unprecedented run of scouting young actors and matching them with projects that perfectly appealed to a pre-teen fan base.

“We look for diversity in every sense of word,” Judy Taylor, the channel’s vice president of casting and talent relations, said. “We’re always searching for that less traditional face, all across the country, even globally.”

The search for new stars to replenish the well has become vital to the channel’s survival and the company’s bottom line.

Each falls within the 13-to-18 age range that Taylor said is ideal for handling the pressure of carrying a show.
Taylor says that the boys, as well as Bridgit Mendler, who stars on “Charlie,” and Debby Ryan, one of the stars of “Suite Life on Deck,” all are “dynamos” with “big personalities, you don’t want them to leave the room.”

Like Gomez, the upcoming set of teen talent will be appearing in several different projects across the Disney corporate landscape. Dano and Dolley have original movies in the works with the channel and Shaw and Mendler have recurring roles on the “Suite Life on Deck” and “Wizards of Waverly Place.”

Taylor said that she doesn’t see the relationship ending when stars like Cyrus eventually move on: “Organically we know at some point our actors will outgrow our programming. It is important for us to create a collaborative relationship, so that when they get older or reach superstar status they’ll consider making movies or records with the Walt Disney company.”

Bridgit Speaks of GLC!

January 27, 2010

The family sitcom “Good Luck Charlie” follows the comedic quandary of teenagers Teddy and PJ Duncan and their 10-year-old brother Gabe when they’re unexpectedly designated babysitters for the new baby in the house as their mom Amy returns to work as a late shift nurse and dad Bob carries on with his pest-control business. Now, the whole family is involved in raising the baby and it’s up to the older kids to come home after school and take charge of young Charlotte (AKA Charlie) all while navigating typical teenage life.

Even the teenagers know that the adorable little bundle of burdens is quite a beautiful addition to the family but with burp cloths in their backpacks and formula stains on their favorite clothes, the Duncan kids have a lot to learn about the comedic chaos this baby can unwittingly create especially when she is mobile, can grasp objects and be generally destructive. Meanwhile, the “new” again parents Amy and Bob quickly relearn everything from existing on two hours of sleep, changing diapers and dodging spit up.

Hard-driving Teddy is determined to juggle her responsibilities to her family with her grades, texting and cell phone chats with friends, all while creating daily video diaries for Charlie to use for advice after Teddy has grown up and moved out. In addition to Teddy’s tips on how to withstand the household, they also relate to being a teenager and dealing with friends, boys and school.

Older brother, the easy-going PJ, spends most of his time preoccupied with girls, and with the time he has leftover, he usually practices with his band “PJ and the Vibe” or argues with Teddy about nearly everything.

Mischievous Gabe maneuvers the transition from being baby in the family to what he considers to be the overlooked rank of middle child. He also has an affinity for coming up with unique solutions to the precarious situations he finds himself getting into.

A New Disney Channel Niche: Adults

January 27, 2010

If dying is easy and comedy is hard, then writing comedy for Disney Channel must be harder still.

Take the biology joke originally considered for the network’s new sitcom “Good Luck Charlie,” which is slated to premiere in the spring. A teenage girl and her “hot” classmate are snuggled on the couch during a study date. When he reaches to turn off the light, she was to say: “Now I’m in the mood for some biology.”

The line received a hearty laugh at a table reading but also raised the eyebrows of Adam Bonnett, Disney Channel’s senior vice president of original series, who jokingly asked the show’s creative team if they could convey the same information without being “so . . . biological.” The dialogue was eventually replaced by a chaste glance. “There was sensitivity that she was being a little too forward,” Bonnett said.

At most other networks, where many sitcoms swim in the muck of lowbrow humor, the joke in question might well have been thrown out too, but for an entirely different reason — namely, that it wasn’t “biological” enough. And even with most other programs on Disney Channel, which courts and still has a dominant hold on the tween audience, the line probably wouldn’t have made it to the table read stage.

Disney’s Teen Star Factor!

January 27, 2010

Bridgit Mendler is a willowy, blond teen with a sweet singing voice and decent comic timing. She’s also the show-biz equivalent of the next iPhone — a young Disney star-in-waiting. Mendler, 17, is getting the full Disney Channel rollout. Introduced with recurring guest spots on two of its hit shows, Jonas and Wizards of Waverly Place, she will star in her own series, Good Luck Charlie, in 2010. “I’ve been told to brace myself,” says Mendler. “If we have the success I hope we have with the show, everything will change.”
Mendler is following a path to fame the channel has mapped over the past three years as it has launched serial stars into orbit: the supernova Miley Cyrus in 2006, Selena Gomez in 2007, the Jonas Brothers in 2008 and Demi Lovato in 2009.
